Sustainable Plywood Alternatives in India (2026)
Plywood is everywhere in Indian homes and offices, but most of it uses timber and glues that contain formaldehyde. If you want something kinder to forests and indoor air, there are several options. Here are seven, with an honest note on each.
The seven options
- Bamboo plywood. Bamboo grows fast and looks distinctive. Many products still use formaldehyde glue, and quality varies a lot by maker.
- Wood plastic composite (WPC). Good in wet areas and resistant to termites. The plastic content is the concern, and it is hard to recycle.
- Straw board. Made from crop leftovers such as wheat straw. BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ is one example. It suits dry indoor use such as furniture, partitions and wall panels.
- Rice husk board. Similar idea using husks. Good moisture and pest resistance, but steady supply can be a problem.
- Plantation timber boards. Made from fast growing trees instead of natural forest. Better than old growth timber, but still wood and often bonded with formaldehyde glue.
- Recycled wood particle board. Uses waste wood and sawdust. Check the glue and expect lower moisture resistance than plywood.
- Bagasse boards. Made from sugarcane waste. A growing option, though supply depends on the sugar season.
How to choose: five questions
- What is it made of, and where does that material come from?
- Is the binder formaldehyde-free, or just low-formaldehyde?
- Is there a real fire classification, such as EN 13501-1, or only the words "fire resistant"?
- Are there test results against a known standard, such as IS 3087?
- Is there carbon evidence, ideally an EPD, and not just a green label? A good supplier answers all five with documents. Be careful with adjectives. For the record, BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ has tests for strength (IS 3087), fire and acoustics, but its carbon figure is an internal estimate and it does not yet have an EPD.
A quick note on cost
Most alternatives cost a little more than ordinary plywood per sheet. The gap shrinks on projects that need green credits, formaldehyde-free boards or carbon reporting. Always compare the full job cost, including cutting and finishing, not only the sheet price.
FAQs
What is the most sustainable alternative to plywood in India?
It depends on where you use it. For dry interiors with no added formaldehyde in the binder and lower carbon, straw board is a strong choice. For wet areas, WPC or marine grade plywood is still better.
Are plywood alternatives more expensive?
Often a little more per sheet. The gap can shrink when a project earns green building credits.
Can I use them like plywood?
For most indoor furniture, partitions and cladding, yes. For structural, wet or outdoor use, check the exact grade and test data.
Does straw board help with stubble burning?
It uses crop residue that might otherwise be burned. One company cannot solve the problem alone, but it creates a paid use for straw.
