What Is a Sustainable Classroom? A Guide for Indian Schools
"Sustainable classroom" can mean many things: a solar roof, a recycling bin or just a slogan. For a school that wants to buy furniture and interiors, it helps to turn the idea into three things you can measure.
Three measurable goals
- Lower embodied carbon. Furniture and finishes have a carbon footprint even before they are used. Our internal estimate for BIOMEBOARD™ is about 158 kg of CO2e per cubic metre, against around 900 for MDF. That is an estimate. We do not yet have an outside-verified EPD.
- Better indoor air. Choose furniture with no added formaldehyde in the board binder. BIOMEBOARD™ uses a No-Added Formaldehyde binder; its tested content was 1.62 mg per 100 g of board. Remember that laminates and glues can add their own formaldehyde, so check the full piece.
- Safe, long-lasting use. Furniture has to survive daily school life. BIOMEBOARD™ met the IS 3087 minimums for strength, screw holding and moisture resistance in testing. We have not done long-term wear tests, so ask us for the data and judge for your needs.
A classroom plan, piece by piece
- Desks, benches and storage: BIOMEBASIC furniture made from BIOMEBOARD™.
- Library shelves: repeatable designs for many classrooms.
- Feature wall: the raw Type R surface shows the straw, which sparks curiosity.
- Partitions: the smooth Type F surface takes paint or laminate. A 16 mm Type F board tested as fire class B-s1,d0.
- Signs and wayfinding: CNC cut letters and symbols.
A real example
In a school project in Chennai, about 8,000 kg of straw went into the furniture and interiors. A single classroom is a good first step before a whole school.
Keep it dry
BIOMEBOARD™ is for dry indoor areas. Keep it away from sinks and washrooms.
What to ask any supplier
- What is the board made from?
- What is the formaldehyde class?
- Where are the test reports?
- What happens at end of life?
A simple rollout plan
- Pick one classroom.
- Choose desks, storage and one feature wall.
- Add a short information board about the material.
- Collect feedback from students and teachers.
- Decide on a wider roll-out.
What to tell parents
Explain what the furniture is made from, what the tests show and what is still an estimate. Clear, honest information builds more trust than big claims.
