Screw Holding Capacity: What 1405 N Means for Your Furniture
Every hinge, drawer slide and shelf bracket is held by a screw. If the board cannot grip the screw, the furniture loosens. Screw holding capacity tells you how well a board grips.
How is it tested?
A screw is driven into a board. A machine then pulls it straight out and records the force needed, measured in newtons (N). A bigger number means a better grip.
Face and edge
Two directions are tested.
- Face: the screw goes into the flat surface.
- Edge: the screw goes into the cut side. This is usually weaker because the inside of the board is exposed.
BIOMEBOARD™ results
Tested to the Indian standard IS 3087-2025 on a 16 mm Type R sample at IWST (ICFRE): ● Face: 1405 N (the standard asks for at least 1250 N) ● Edge: 850 N (the standard asks for at least 850 N)
The face result is about 12% above the minimum. The edge result meets the minimum exactly.
What does that mean in practice?
- Standard hinges, handles, shelf pins and brackets can be fixed to the face with normal screws.
- For edge fixings, leave extra distance from the corner and use the right screw for particle-type boards. Do not rely on edge screws for heavy loads.
Tips for fabricators
- Pre-drill pilot holes.
- Use coarse-thread screws made for particle board.
- Keep fixings away from cut edges.
- Do not over-tighten, which strips the hole.
What about other boards?
Plywood usually grips screws better. Plain particle board must also meet the same standard minimums to be compliant. We do not publish a side-by-side table here because we do not hold test results for other brands run under the same conditions.
Why a good grip matters
A weak grip leads to loose hinges, sagging doors and wobbly shelves. These problems show up months later and are costly to fix. Checking screw holding before you choose a board saves repairs.
Mistakes to avoid
- Driving screws too close to a cut edge.
- Using fine-thread wood screws.
- Skipping pilot holes.
- Over-tightening.
- Re-using a stripped hole.
FAQs
What is screw withdrawal strength?
The force needed to pull a screw out of a board.
Is 1405 N strong?
It passes the IS 3087 requirement and is good for normal furniture hardware.
Why is edge holding lower?
The cut edge exposes the loose inside of the board.
Can I use any screw?
Use screws designed for particle board, and pre-drill.
Do I need special inserts?
For heavy or often-removed fixings, metal inserts are wise on any board.
Does board thickness matter?
Yes. A thicker board holds a longer screw, which usually grips better.
Can I reuse a screw hole?
Repeated drilling in the same spot weakens the grip. Move the fixing or repair the hole with glue and a dowel.
Which screw should I use?
A coarse-thread screw made for particle board, with a pilot hole sized as the screw maker advises.
