Recyclable, Biodegradable, Circular: What They Mean
Brochures love green words. But "recyclable", "biodegradable" and "circular" mean different things. Knowing the difference helps you spot real claims.
Recyclable
A recyclable material can be collected and turned into new products. The catch is that it must be possible in practice, not just in theory. Much MDF and particle board is not recycled in practice because the glue makes the fibres hard to separate.
Biodegradable
A biodegradable material can be broken down by tiny living things, like microbes, into natural parts. Without a time and a place, the word means very little. A board made from plants is not automatically biodegradable once it is glued and pressed.
Circular
Circular is the biggest idea. It means a whole system where materials keep being used, recovered and used again, instead of being thrown away.
Where does BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ fit?
Here is what we can honestly say:
- It is about 95% wheat straw, which is a crop leftover.
- The data sheet lists it as recyclable in its original form.
- We have not tested how fast it breaks down, so we do not call it biodegradable.
- We do not yet run a take-back or recycling programme, so we do not call it fully circular. The strongest part of our story is at the start of the chain: using farm leftovers instead of cutting trees.
How to spot a good claim
- It names the material and where it comes from.
- It gives a number or a test, not only an adjective.
- It says what is not yet proven. Be careful with words like "fully", "zero waste" and "100% eco-friendly". They are hard to prove.
Why documents matter
Green building schemes such as LEED and IGBC ask for proof. An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is the strongest. We do not have one yet, so we do not claim certification credits on the strength of our brochures.
Quick cheat sheet
- Recyclable: can be made into something new.
- Biodegradable: nature can break it down.
- Circular: the whole system keeps materials in use. Ask for the proof behind each word. If a supplier cannot give it, treat the word as marketing.
FAQs
Is recyclable the same as biodegradable?
No. One means reprocessed into something new. The other means broken down by nature.
Is BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ recyclable?
The data sheet says it is recyclable in its original form. A recycling route is not set up yet.
Is BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ biodegradable?
We have no test data, so we do not say so.
What does circular mean for a board?
Raw material comes from waste or renewable sources, the product lasts, and at the end it is recovered rather than dumped.
How do I avoid greenwashing?
Ask for the proof behind every green word.
Is "eco-friendly" a real claim?
It has no fixed meaning. Ask what exactly is better and by how much.
