Raw Texture in Design: Using Exposed Straw-Flake Surfaces
Most boards are made to disappear. They are sanded, painted or covered with laminate until you cannot tell what is inside. BIOMEBOARD™ Type R does the opposite. It leaves the straw flakes visible on the surface, so the material shows its own story.
What is Type R?
Type R is the raw surface of BIOMEBOARD™. You see the pieces of wheat straw pressed into the board. Type F is the fine, smooth surface made for paint, laminate and veneer.
Why do designers like raw surfaces?
Architects have long used honest, exposed materials such as board-marked concrete and raw brick to show authenticity. Natural, visible texture is also popular in current interior trends. Type R is a manufactured board that still looks like a plant material, which makes it feel both modern and natural.
Where does Type R suit?
- Feature walls and wall cladding
- Reception and lobby panels
- Branding installations, where CNC cutting can create letters and shapes
- Display units and signs
- Reading nooks and quiet corners
What does the data say?
The IS 3087 test on BIOMEBOARD™ was done on a 16 mm Type R sample. It met the standard's limits for bending strength, internal bond, screw holding and swelling; the binder has No-Added Formaldehyde. One thing to know: the fire test (class B-s1,d0) was done on a Type F board. Type R has not been fire tested yet. If your project needs a fire rating, ask us first.
How do you handle and finish it?
- Raw fibres can absorb paint unevenly, so use a primer first if you plan to paint.
- Many designers leave Type R unpainted, or use a clear or very light finish to keep the texture.
- Dust and mark it like any natural surface.
- Keep it dry. Water makes the board swell.
No. Type R is a look, not a different performance level. Pick it for the design, not for strength or sound.
Pairing ideas
Raw straw texture looks good beside warm lighting, simple joinery, plain walls, dark metal details and natural fabrics. Keep the rest of the design calm so the texture stands out.
Care and cleaning
Dust with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid heavy water and strong cleaners. Keep it away from spills.
FAQs
What is the difference between Type R and Type F?
Type R is raw and textured. Type F is smooth and ready for finishes.
Can I paint Type R?
Yes, with a primer. Painting hides the texture, though.
Is Type R fire rated?
Not yet tested. The fire result is for Type F.
Is Type R good for walls?
Yes, for dry interior walls.
Can it be CNC cut?
Yes.
Does the colour vary between sheets?
Yes. Natural straw varies, and that is part of the look. Ask for samples from more than one sheet.
