LEED and IGBC for Hotels: How Materials Help Earn Points
LEED and IGBC are two green building rating systems used in India. Both give points for healthier, lower impact materials. Hotels use them to meet brand standards and attract guests who care about sustainability.
What are they?
- LEED comes from the US Green Building Council. In India, LEED certification is handled by GBCI.
- IGBC is run by the Indian Green Building Council, part of the Confederation of Indian Industry. It has its own rating systems built for Indian buildings. Hotels pick one or the other, depending on the owner and the brand.
Which credits touch interior materials?
Three areas often come up.
- Low-emitting materials. These credits ask for lab proof that boards and finishes give off little formaldehyde and VOCs, often to a named test method.
- Materials and resources. These reward recycled content, reduced impact products and sometimes rapidly renewable materials.
- Innovation. Rating bodies sometimes reward new material ideas.
Where does BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ fit?
- Formaldehyde: Our binder has no added formaldehyde, and the board has measured formaldehyde test results. That points the same way as low-emitting credits. But we do not yet have the specific chamber emission report that some reviewers ask for.
- Raw material: About 95% of the board is crop residue, and annual crop leftovers may suit "rapidly renewable" ideas. Check this with your consultant.
- Fire rating: B-s1,d0 on a 16 mm Type F board is a good safety fact, but fire class is not itself a LEED or IGBC materials credit.
The honest gap: EPDs
Many material credits now ask for an Environmental Product Declaration, a verified report on a product's life cycle. BIOME does not yet hold one. Our carbon figure of about 158 kg of CO2e per cubic metre is an internal estimate. So treat BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ today as a good fit for design intent, healthy material goals and narrative, and ask your certification consultant which credits they will accept without an EPD.
Practical steps
- Share the data sheet and test reports early, before credit planning.
- Tell your consultant plainly that an EPD is not yet available.
- Do not promise points until the consultant confirms them.
What documents to collect
- Product data sheet
- Fire and strength test reports
- Emission test report for formaldehyde and VOCs
- Raw material details
- EPD, if available Giving these to your consultant early saves time later.
FAQs
Can BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ earn LEED points?
It may support some credits. We cannot promise any until your consultant confirms.
Which is better for a hotel, LEED or IGBC?
IGBC suits many Indian projects. LEED is common for international brands.
What is a rapidly renewable material?
One that regrows or is harvested on a short cycle.
Do I need an EPD?
Often, for the stronger material credits.
Does a fire class earn a credit?
Not directly. Fire safety is handled by building codes, not by these rating credits.
