Is MDF Bad for the Environment?
MDF is not the worst material, but it does have three real environmental problems: it uses wood, it usually contains formaldehyde glue, and it carries a lot of embodied carbon. Here is each one in plain words.
1. Does MDF cause deforestation?
MDF is a wood product, so making it needs trees. Much of it now comes from plantations instead of natural forest, which helps. But plantations still use land and water. Boards made from crop leftovers, such as straw, need no trees at all.
Most MDF is held together with urea-formaldehyde or similar glue. Formaldehyde can slowly escape into room air, and international bodies classify it as a human carcinogen. Emission tests measure the release level. No-Added Formaldehyde binders avoid adding formaldehyde to the glue.
3. What is embodied carbon?
Embodied carbon is the greenhouse gas released to make a material, from growing or collecting the raw material to pressing the board. Our internal estimates put MDF near 900 kg of CO2e per cubic metre, particle board near 750 and plywood near 650. BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ is estimated at about 158. That is an estimated 80% lower. These are estimates, and BIOMEBOARDâ„¢'s figure has not yet been verified by an outside body.
What happens at the end of life?
MDF fibres are locked in resin, so they are hard to separate and reuse. A lot of MDF ends up in landfill or is burned. No board is perfect here. BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ is listed as recyclable in its original form, but a recycling route is not yet in place.
Does straw help?
Straw is a farm leftover. Using it for boards gives it a paid use. We do not claim that this stops all burning. It is a small step in the right direction.
So is MDF bad?
It is not "bad" in every case. It is cheap, easy to use and widely available. But for projects that care about indoor air, forests or carbon, a lower-impact board is easier to defend.
How to cut the impact of any board
- Choose the right thickness, so you do not use more than you need.
- Plan cuts to reduce waste, and reuse offcuts.
- Ask for test reports and emission classes.
- Design furniture to be repaired, not replaced.
FAQs
Is MDF toxic?
Fresh MDF can release formaldehyde. Ventilate new furniture and choose low-emission boards.
Is MDF recyclable?
It is hard to recycle in practice.
Roughly 900 kg of CO2e per cubic metre, by our estimate.
What is a better alternative to MDF?
Look for boards with no added formaldehyde, a plant-based raw material and test reports. Straw board is one option.
Is E0 MDF better for the environment?
It releases less formaldehyde, but it is still made with formaldehyde-based glue and still comes from wood.
