Biophilic and Circular Design Trends in Indian Interiors
Two big ideas are shaping interiors in Europe and are now arriving in India: biophilic design and circular thinking. Both are changing what architects ask for when they pick materials.
What is biophilic design?
Biophilic design brings nature into buildings. Many people picture plant walls and skylights. But the idea is also about materials: raw stone, unfinished wood, jute, cane, clay and other visibly natural textures. The surface itself reminds people of the natural world.
What is circular design?
Circular design asks how products can keep materials in use and keep waste out. It looks at where a material comes from, how long it lasts and what happens at the end of life.
Why is this reaching India now?
Designers, clients and companies are asking sharper questions about carbon, air quality and waste. In Europe, rules are moving this from a nice idea to a paper requirement. Construction products increasingly need documents such as Environmental Product Declarations. In India, these are still mainly design and brand choices, but expectations are rising.
How does BIOMEBOARDâ„¢ fit?
- Natural look: the raw Type R surface shows its plant fibres, so it adds texture without extra decoration.
- Circular start: about 95% of the board is wheat straw, a farm leftover.
- Healthier binder: a No-Added Formaldehyde binder, with measured results available in the board test report.
- Tested basics: the board has test results for strength and fire (for a 16 mm Type F board).
Where does it fall short?
Be clear about it:
- BIOME does not yet hold an EPD, so it is not ready for projects that need one.
- It is made for dry interiors, not for outdoors or wet areas.
- Type R has not been fire tested.
How to use these trends well
Pick a material for how it looks and how it is made, not only for the story. Ask suppliers for documents. A good material story should be easy to check.
Ways to use these ideas
- Use one raw material surface as the hero of a room.
- Keep the other materials simple.
- Choose products with clear documents.
- Tell the material story on a small sign or card.
